Spirulina is a cyanobacterium (blue-green algae) that belongs to the genera Arthrospira and Spirulina. It is widely used as a dietary supplement and has several species, with the following being the most common: Arthrospira platensis Habitat: Found in tropical and subtropical lakes with high pH and salinity. Characteristics: Contains high levels of proteins (50–70%), essential amino acids, vitamins (B-complex, vitamin E), and minerals. Rich in antioxidants like phycocyanin and beta-carotene. Preferred species for commercial cultivation due to its ease of growth and high nutritional content. This is the type of live spirulina used in our culturing kits. Arthrospira maxima Habitat: Native to alkaline lakes in Central America, such as Lake Texcoco in Mexico. Characteristics: Extremely high protein content (~70% of dry weight).
