Common Live Spirulina Types

Spirulina is a cyanobacterium (blue-green algae) that belongs to the genera Arthrospira and Spirulina. It is widely used as a dietary supplement and has several species, with the following being the most common:

Arthrospira platensis

Habitat: Found in tropical and subtropical lakes with high pH and salinity.

Characteristics:
Contains high levels of proteins (50–70%), essential amino acids, vitamins (B-complex, vitamin E), and minerals.

Rich in antioxidants like phycocyanin and beta-carotene.

Preferred species for commercial cultivation due to its ease of growth and high nutritional content. This is the type of live spirulina used in our culturing kits.

Arthrospira maxima

Habitat: Native to alkaline lakes in Central America, such as Lake Texcoco in Mexico.

Characteristics:
Extremely high protein content (~70% of dry weight).

High concentration of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a beneficial omega-6 fatty acid.

Slightly more challenging to cultivate compared to A. platensis due to specific environmental requirements.

Spirulina subsalsa

Habitat: Found in brackish or marine environments with slightly lower salinity than other species.

Characteristics:
Moderately high protein content.

Contains pigments like chlorophyll and phycocyanin.

Adapted for use in research and small-scale cultivation rather than large-scale production.

Spirulina fusiformis

Habitat: Found in freshwater and alkaline ponds, particularly in India and Southeast Asia.

Characteristics:
Rich in vitamins (especially B12) and antioxidants.

Commonly used in traditional medicines and as a dietary supplement in its native regions.

General Benefits of Live Spirulina:

Detoxifies heavy metals, particularly arsenic.

Boosts immune function and energy levels.

Reduces cholesterol and improves heart health.

Aids in weight management due to its high protein content and low calorie count.

Supports gut health by promoting beneficial gut bacteria.
